In context, it’s actually – whisper it – quite charming. It also chats shit, constantly, but the incessant banter really isn’t as bad as you’ve been led to believe from all the memes and dodgy trailers. A sentient cuff has bound itself to you, and acts as your mentor-cum-friend in these strange new worlds. It’s Wizard of Oz via all the JRPG tropes you’d expect from the studio that made Final Fantasy 15. We should all give Forspoken a(nother) chance.īut what if I told you that, actually, it’s not that bad? That – when you get your hands on it – it actually feels OK to play? Playing as Frey, the young black woman spirited away from New York and dumped in the land of Athia, you are tasked with helping the people of a dying land in order to get back home. A game people are gleefully watching, expecting it to fail, at worst. That’s a fair comment, right? A cursory look at any of the popular gaming message boards, or at social media, will instantly tell you that Forspoken is no-one’s most anticipated game. We all know Forspoken as the game that’s been perpetually delayed, that’s been laughed at for its dumb trailers, and that’s been sort-of left out to die. Regardless, if you find yourself on the fence about buying Forspoken, check out the demo before purchasing the full-on game, both of which are currently available to play on the PS5.Right. So, yes, even though Forspoken’s actual dialogue is pretty cringe, that likely won’t be a total deal-breaker for everyone. That being said, the game’s poor dialogue certainly doesn’t give the overall story the boost it deserves in parts. It’s important to distinguish between dialogue and story, as these are two separate entities that demand different writing skill sets. Learning the game’s mechanics, especially all of the spells, can be really overwhelming at first, but once the player explores Athia, it becomes glorious.Īlso, just because the game’s dialogue isn’t great doesn’t mean that Forspoken’s overall story is god-awful. Traversing throughout the open world using Frey’s parkour is extremely satisfying, with the added challenge early on of not having every ability at your disposal making the gameplay somewhat difficult, enjoyably so.
